Creativity and Wellbeing in Key Stage 2 Children

Creativity plays a significant role in supporting the wellbeing of children in Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11). Here are some key ways it can help:

Emotional Expression & Regulation

Value For Money (7).png

Boosting Confidence & Self-Esteem

Value For Money (8).png

Creative activities like drawing, painting, writing stories, or making music help children express emotions they might struggle to articulate. Art and storytelling can act as an emotional outlet for stress, anxiety, or frustration.

Completing creative projects gives children a sense of achievement. Encourages them to take pride in their ideas and abilities, which builds self-confidence.

Enhancing Social Skills & Connection

Reducing Stress & Anxiety

Group creative activities (like drama, storytelling, and collaborative art) encourage teamwork, communication, and empathy. Sharing creative work fosters positive peer relationships and a sense of belonging.

Creative play provides a calming effect, especially when children engage in immersive activities like crafting, music, or imaginative play. Mindfulness-based creativity, such as colouring or storytelling, helps children focus and relax.

Providing a Sense of Identity & Self-Discovery

Value For Money (8).png

Creative challenges teach children to persist despite difficulties and see learning as a journey rather than a destination. Helps them understand that creativity is about process over perfection.

Providing a Sense of Identity & Self-Discovery Exploring different creative mediums allows children to discover their interests, strengths, and passions. Helps them develop a stronger sense of self and personal identity.

Making Learning More Engaging & Fun

Value For Money (10).png

When creativity is incorporated into learning (e.g., storytelling in history, drawing in science), it makes education more enjoyable and memorable. Reduces academic stress and helps children develop a love for learning.

Improving Fine & Gross Motor Skills

Creative tasks like painting, sculpting, and crafting refine fine motor skills. Activities like drama, dance, and role-play enhance gross motor coordination.

Encouraging Problem- Solving & Resilience

Creativity helps children think outside the box and find new ways to solve problems. Through trial and error in creative tasks, they develop resilience and learn that mistakes are part of the process.

Supporting Cognitive Development & Focus

Activities like writing, playing music, and designing things improve concentration and cognitive flexibility. Encourages curiosity and independent thinking, which enhances overall learning.

Sessions can be delivered either online or in person - whichever suits your setting best. Whether we’re joining your students in the classroom or connecting via video, the experience is interactive, engaging, and designed to feel seamless. We work with your schedule to make sure sessions fit easily into the school day.

No Special Equipment Needed

All sessions are designed to be simple to set up and fully resourced. Students only need pen and paper - we bring everything else. If needed, we’re happy to integrate the use of computers or assistive tech for students who rely on writing aids, ensuring full accessibility without additional pressure on staff or budgets.

Led by Our Creative Specialist

Each session is delivered by a qualified member of our Creative Gym team, so classroom teachers don’t need to lead or plan anything. This gives them valuable time back, while still ensuring students are fully supported. We do ask that a support staff member is present in sessions to help with any pastoral or classroom needs that may arise.

Flexible and Focused

Sessions are structured but flexible, allowing space for student voice, creativity, and curriculum links. Whether it's a single workshop or part of a longer program, we tailor each experience to support your goals - whether that’s boosting engagement, building confidence, or challenging students to go further.

Discovery Meetings: Shaping the Program Around You

Every school is different, so before we start, we hold a Discovery Meeting to understand your unique needs.

In this session, we’ll:

  • Identify your students’ key challenges and goals

  • Explore how our sessions can align with your curriculum and priorities

  • Agree on the best format, timing, and frequency for delivery

  • Discuss how to measure impact and ensure meaningful outcomes

This collaborative meeting ensures The Creative Gym fits seamlessly into your school’s vision and supports students in the most effective way possible.

How a session works

In Person or online session

Beyond the Classroom

Building lifelong learning habits

The Creative Gym helps students see learning as something that extends beyond the classroom walls. By combining play, experimentation, and project-based creativity, students learn that education isn’t confined to a timetable. They’re more likely to continue exploring ideas independently, pursue personal projects, and take ownership of their growth - essential habits for lifelong learning.

Encouraging Independent Initiative

Students involved in creative projects often take initiative to develop their own ideas. Whether it's sketching out a design at home or writing a script after school, The Creative Gym gives students the confidence and motivation to keep going beyond the session. This ability to self-start is a key skill not just for school, but for life.

Blurring the line between work and Play

When students are engaged in creative sessions that feel more like play than work, their perception of learning changes. The Creative Gym fosters an environment where creativity becomes a natural part of problem-solving and

self-expression. As a result, students are more inclined to work on their projects in their own time - not because they have to, but because they want to.

Bridging School with the Real World

Creative projects often mirror the kinds of challenges students will face in life and work - solving problems, working in teams, pitching ideas, and seeing projects through from concept to completion. The Creative Gym introduces real-world thinking in a low-stakes, high-engagement environment that prepares students to be proactive, thoughtful contributors beyond the classroom.

Creative Gym Testimonials

Student 1 - Ryan

Ryan is one of the students on the Creative Gym. He looked everywhere for a course that would inspire him as his body clock was ruined and he had no aspirations to do anything. He had excluded himself socially and couldn't get to any of the classes or facilities that could offer support. After Ryan was on the course for 2 months, we had a check-up call with Ryan and his Mum. Karen said how “He is excited to do things again. He is up early every day now to work on the activities you send him. I can see the difference in him, he’s even talking about going back to college”. Since joining the Creative Gym, Ryan has sorted his body clock, is waking up in time for sessions and producing a variety of creative projects with ideas of what he would like to do in the future.

Student 2 – Alice

Alice was a student who joined the Creative Gym as she didn’t know what she wanted to do. She had lost all motivation and was struggling with her confidence. She said this after completing a short programme on the Creative Gym. "The Creative Gym has really helped me. Before I joined, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Trying out all the different tasks in different subjects helped me find something I am interested in. My coach helped me understand how I can create my own project and how the daily tasks can used to add to what I am creating. I’m planning on going back to college to do Graphic Design. I couldn’t recommend The Creative Gym enough!"

Parent 1 - Keren

Grace was a new student to the Creative Gym. Her mum was looking for a place she could be creative and feel comfortable. Grace is also very quiet so has struggled in other classroom environments, This is a message from her mum after Grace's first week. "Mornin!!! Thank you so much! Grace is so happy she said words like perfect outstanding every time she interacts with the staff at Start it gets better and better! All her words, it was so great to hear her chatting away. Thanks so much and yep by all means send everything you need over here. She is so creative she draws and writes every day. Absolutely chuffed to bits!"

Parent 2 – Jane

(Talking about our In-person Event with Liverpool Council) “It was great to join in as Will can struggle in person. I appreciated meeting other Mums! They seemed to be in a similar situation to me.” “The other people at the event were very nice but Will was very nervous. I had noticed another looking over at us so I spoke to him. Will had recognised another students voice from the online session as well but they would not approach each other at first. (I suspect most of them didn't like eye contact). Once the session started we broke the ice, and they all got along great.” “The creative exercises are fun and engaging. The Start Education Team are friendly and knowledgeable.”
